French producer Drol. makes demented melodic techno from his new homebase of Montréal, where he has also insinuated himself into the “total art” collective Nebulae, known for devising underground electronic music and art events with an immersive, era spanning edge. A prolific mix maker for years as well as a classically trained pianist and jazz percussionist, the man behind Drol, Romain Gouillart, poured this background into the tracks on his debut Aurora EP in 2013, released on German label Traum Schallplatten’s Zaubernuss imprint. With an arsenal of arpeggiated melodies, synth washes and syncopated beats inspired as much by nature as by movie scores and electrojazz, Drol.’s live set unfolds like an intricate mystery novel set in the near future, each chapter diving deeper into its wired, moody world and propelling us on a mad chase towards a frenzied conclusion.
