Sian Fan is an interdisciplinary artist working between Essex and London, where she is a resident artist at Somerset House Studios. From 2021 to 2022, she was the resident artist of Digital Wonderlands at the V&A Museum. She is also an alumna of the Sarabande Foundation, where she resided between 2020 and 2021. A graduate of the Master of Fine Arts course at Central Saint Martins, she received the prestigious Mona Hatoum Scholarship and was nominated for the Nova Award. In 2014, she graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts and Dance Performance from the University of Brighton, where she received the Outstanding Creative Achievement award.

Her work combines movement, the female body, and technology to explore embodiment, spirituality, and the human experience in the digital age. Drawing on her experience in aerial and contemporary dance, she suspends, fragments, and augments the body through choreography and digital techniques. She works across media, combining the physical and the virtual, through sculpture, performance, animation, moving images, and virtual and augmented reality. Coming from a mixed heritage (Chinese and British), her practice meditates on her own fragmented sense of identity, exploring what it means to exist between worlds.

For the 15 years of MUTEK in Barcelona, Sian Fan will present her installation Deity at the Play program. In the Symposium she will engage in a discussion that examines the traditionally gendered fabric of digital experiences and maps out a more equitable and diverse future digital arts and music landscape.

Presented with support of the British Council.
