Simon Chioini got into music while studying classical percussion, as well as through a persistent examination of the weird electronic output of the '90s and '00s. His curiosity for the medium led him to receive his master's in composition from the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal. There, his music drew from influences that included both electroacoustic music pioneers and members of the contemporary underground scene.
Félix Gourd studied classical percussion at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal before shifting his practice towards digital art. His interest in the experimental potential of 3D animation and his highly creative mind quickly brought him recognition as a VJ. Recently, his focus has returned to his musical roots: Influenced by the Berlin underground scene and Detroit’s classic techno, he likes to blend continuous banging kick drums; distorted, crispy hi-hats toped; acid bass lines; and DX7 chord hits.
Montreal duo Musique Nouvelle reflects the artists' shared desire to make layered, lively techno—and their passion for experimentation, and the exploration of new sounds. Live performances, like this year's at MUTEK, and the improvisation that comes with them, are at the heart of the group's creative process.
