Mark Templeton & aAron Munson

Though Alberta isn't the first place that comes to mind when people think of cutting-edge ambient music, Canadian experimental electronic artist Mark Templeton counts as an exception to the rule. Templeton uses his laptop to process the sound of acoustic instruments, mixing in field recordings and sampled audio along the way to build a subtly rhythmic pulsation akin to melody. Whereas other laptop ambient producers will turn to the guitar for plundering, Templeton instead relies on his years of playing stringed classical instruments in an electro-acoustic environment as source material. The overall effect is just as dissonant but much warmer. Templeton began releasing music in 2005, both as a solo artist and as part of the group Fields Awake, and quickly made a name as a talent to watch. His latest release, Standing On A Hummingbird (Anticipate Records), came out this past February and fulfilled that early potential, earning him rave comparisons to Christian Fennesz and Tim Hecker. This MUTEK showcase will allow Templeton to further his strong history of audio/visual collaboration alongside fellow Edmonton filmmaker aAron Munson.
