A sound artist at heart, Montreal-based Mimi Allard has been composing and showcasing her sound design talents in the context of movie soundtracks and artistic installations. Allard’s academic training started with intermedia studies at Concordia University, before opting to further her knowledge on audio synthesis, programming, and 3D audio spatialization. Using modular synthesis, programming languages, and developing a new acoustic voice-based digital instrument, Allard searches to innovate and explore the physics, mathematics, and geometry behind sound synthesis.

Currently pursuing a masters in composition and sound design, Gabriel Lavoie Viau’s creative path has led him to composing original music for theatre and cinema. After studies in digital composition and cinema, the Montreal-based musician started collaborating with interactive media studio Iregular for international projects. More recently, Viau has been sharing his explorations in the field of modular synthesis and analog-digital interface interaction through workshops in Montreal’s art centres Eastern Bloc and Oboro.

With their new project entitled 4:3, the duo explores math-based tuning ratios, as well as frequency modulation synthesis. With the help of a sound module created by themselves, their mind-bending microtonal explorations are bound to lure the listener into an elaborate dance of sine waves.
