BASIC HOUSE (UK)
NOCTURNE 2 :: THE IMMACULATE PERCEPTION
Thursday, May 28 - Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal

Operating out of remote northeast England, Stephen Bishop is the meticulous curatorial mastermind behind Opal Tapes, one of the most highly lauded cassette labels of the past few years and a true labour of love. Bishop’s infatuation with cassettes and all kinds of DIY electronic distortion took root in his old Newcastle stomping grounds, where he was weaned on hardcore, noise and punk. Since launching the one man affair Opal Tapes in 2012, the genre busting, ultra limited run imprint has put out decaying techno, broken house, dissipating drone experimentations and forays into sound realms that sit somewhere between the chilled gloom of machinery and the warm sheen of nature. After building a choice platform to showcase the work of skilled rhythmic warblers such as Huerco S, Wanda Group and Patricia, Bishop also shared his personal brand of outsider electronics and wayward 4/4 textures as Basic House, crafting a sparse, techno minded collision of electro acoustics and noise/drone. Having just launched sister label Black Opal, an all wax endeavour dedicated to new material and classic reissues, Bishop brought his unpredictable sonic rumble and entirely improvised live practice to the MUTEK arena.
