Sonya Stefan is a Canadian media & dance artist whose practice includes glitchy analog (high8|VHS), feed-backing light refractions and 16mm hand-processed film. She creates within curiosity and playfulness, a place where unexpected dance hangs out, between camera movement and cameraless film techniques. She is interested in virtual togetherness, body shifts in realms unknown and challenging her sense of time. She has difficulty embracing a slower pace but dreams of it.
Between collecting tube televisions on garbage day and taking long forest walks, she collects images of the shifting natural world and then composites them to create meditative loops. She loves analog cameras and archive footage with which she will create digital hybrids in the foreseeable future. This past November, she won 2021 Best National Medium-Length Film at the (RIDM) Montreal International Documentary Festival for her film “The Truss Arch”, a work created with her 80- year old mother.
