MUTEK_IMG: Lectures, Workshops and the World Premiere of NFB's Dream

Dream web

This year, MUTEK_IMG offers a series of lectures, networking activities and workshops exploring themes such as innovative immersive experiences, digital society issues and visions for the future.

Here are some of the programming highlights:

Dream imagined and composed by Philippe Lambert

Created by experimental musician Philippe Lambert, Dream is a source of online experiences inspired by the unique mechanisms of dreams, which seem to draw on personal, collective and genetic memories. Dream—more of an alternate reality than virtual reality—is a brief immersion into a parallel dimension which has us reconsider our relationship between the dream and the awaken states. Dream’s landscapes were created by artists Caroline Robert and Vincent Lambert, and some dreams illustrated are the work of live drawing events participants. Dream is supported by a custom-made audiovisual synthesizer by Édouard Lanctôt-Benoit. Each visual memory is to be transformed and blend into another memory, creating a unique experience for every dreamer.

Dream will also be available to view online in 2D and 3D.

VR:RV – A German-Canadian virtual reality exchange

MUTEK_IMG will be hosting the first meetings of this exchange which aims to invigorate the scenes in both countries by creating the ideal setting for collaboration and co-production, while rethinking the language and modes by which we engage with VR and the wider digital world. VR:RV intends to provoke conversations, and ultimately VR works, that challenge, critique and problematize the digital society through issues such as artificial intelligence, algorithms, digital privacy, digital democracy, and the future of the Internet. Various workshops and public panels will take place from April to November 2018 in Montreal and Berlin.

VR:RV is a project by the Goethe-Institut realized with the support of the Federal Foreign Office of Germany. The project has been developed in close collaboration with MUTEK and re:publica in Berlin.

Ma réserve by Brigitte Poupart

This fiction, made in virtual reality, is based on a Paul Auster novel. This project is the first step towards a motion picture which will be filmed using a 360-degree camera, a Brigitte Poupart initiative in collaboration with playwright Fabien Cloutier. We follow the main character, played by Robert Morin, completely immersed into his universe as he wakes up, disoriented, in an unknown space, between four walls. We then get to witness this man’s anxiety, sorrows and dismay.

Projects presentation by semifinalists in the International competition: Interactive Architectural Mapping.

The Quartier des Spectacles Partnership in collaboration with MUTEK and MAPP_MTL invites the public to discover the first prototypes developed by the six contest semifinalists. Thomas Ouellet Fredericks, Fred Trétout and Philippe Hughes, Video Phase, Hub studio, Ensemble Ensemble, as well as MAOTIK and Cesar Urbina will present their creative process during two screenings on the building facade next to the Saint-Laurent station, April 11 and 12, 8:30 pm. The presentations are free and open to all.

Xn Lecture: Three case studies on immersive and experiential productions presented by Xn Quebec

Digital producers and creators share their experiences in terms of project genesis (Dream, Ma réserve, ENTROPIA), production, distribution as well as various other related issues. A not-to-be-missed session for anyone interested in the production of original content for immersive platforms, on Thursday, April 12. RSVP here.
