Señor Coconut & His OrchestraCL
Led by Uwe Schmidt (a.k.a. Atom Heart), the Señor Coconut project revisits classics of the 70s and 80s, reinterpreting them with an inimitable Latin flair. Scrupulously executed, the brilliance of this caustic approach may well overshadow the original compositions. Their first victim was Kraftwerk, that mythical precursor to the current electronic wave, whose work was subjected to repeated assaults by these masters of hybrid chicanery. The question is, who's next on the musical chopping block? We'll soon find out, since Señor Coconut is about to release a new album. In the meantime, MUTEK is pleased to host the combo's North American debut, which likely will be their last performance of Kraftwerk material. Live, the dynamism of the ensemble is largely driven by the cataclysmic presence of brass and percussion, as arranged by Danish bandleader August Engkilde, the charisma of Venezuelan singer Argenis Brito, and the unmistakably singular manipulations of brainchild Atom Heart.
