International Festival of Digital Creativity and Electronic Music

Radiq’s Yoshihiro Hanno may not be a household name in North American or European electronic-music circles yet, but those who’ve taken the time to explore his discography and hunt down his hard-to-find releases will happily admit that Hanno’s obscurity is more a matter of geographic isolation than anything to do with his boundless musical creativity. Veteran of the now-defunct Mutliphonic Ensemble that made waves on the venerable Belgian experimental imprint Sub Rosa in the late-90s, Hanno has spent much of the time since cultivating his talents as one of East-Asia’s more reputable cinematic scorers, delivering music to several films per year. His beautiful soundtrack work has occasionally filtered out onto record, though little of it has left the Asian market. Wehat has transcended boundaries is his jazz-inflected take on house music, which he creates as Radiq (solo) and Radiq Septet (his live band). Warm, percussive, soulful and brimming with ghosts of Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew, Hanno translates his passion for jazz into a highly addictive, undeniably hip-shaking groove not unlike Theo Parrish’s work on the Sound Signatures label. This year solo performance at MUTEK is a North American premiere.
