Jason Hopfner is a singular, outlandish artist originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba. His output draws inspiration from mid-1990s minimal electro by the likes of Mike Ink and Maurizio. With his project Knowing Looks, Hopfner creates deep/minimal soundscapes that cast eclectic samplings and glitches over weird, complex beats. Hopfner, who has worked as a boom operator for film and TV since 2000, has developed a niche whereby he creates new themes via software manipulation of music that already exists. Although the sounds resulting from Hopfner's aural surgery are diametrically opposed to the original works, his goal with Knowing Looks is to find a new perspective on the work of the artists and engineers who first created them. Jason Hopfner has released an initial EP of four tracks under the Knowing Looks moniker, 2006's The Homeless Landlord, on indie label Grain Records.
