International Festival of Digital Creativity and Electronic Music

With five singles under the Floating Points alias since 2009, Londoner Samuel T. Shepherd is a classically trained 24 year-old with talent to burn. The surface facade of his sonic landscape are not unlike recent deep-house revivalists such as Motor City Drum Ensemble, but underneath the richly textured grooves of Shepherd’s productions lie patterns that have little to with Detroit or Chicago’s past. On the one hand, there’s an appreciation for jazz that borrows more readily from the fusionist club tendencies of Gilles Peterson for its warmth and cadence. On the other, his penchant for veering off straight 4/4 beat pegs the Floating Points discography closer to that of an ever-mutating bass culture. With work already released on the red-hot Planet Mu and his own Eglo Records, Floating Points’ possibilities are about as funky as they are limitless. Shepherd sometimes pulls the project out of a laptop and turns it into the Floating Points Ensemble, a nod to his abilities with real instrumentation.
