International Festival of Digital Creativity and Electronic Music

With a prolific run of singles on Planet Mu, Rush Hour, Ramp Recordings since 2007, FaltyDL’s Drew Cyrus Lustman has burst out of a revitalized New York club scene with a sound that’s at once incredibly mature and unmistakably global. Borrowing equally from house, breakbeat, and bass culture, Lustman’s rhythms are remarkably complex and cultivated, and would otherwise verge on braindance intelligence if not for their sharp-nosed focus on keeping the funk primed and centered. And yet his two albums to date, 2009’s Love is a Liability and this year’s excellent You Stand Uncertain are both undeniably soulful affairs. Part of this is chalked up to the fact that, as he grows more assured as a producer, Lustman has gravitated toward working with female vocalists who soften his sound. But another part is derived from his obvious interest in UK garage and early rave breaks, two streams of influence that have never shied away from sentimentalizing on top of dirty rhythms.
