Plastikman Leads Second Wave of MUTEK 2011 Acts!

On Friday, June 3rd, RICHIE HAWTIN, the most heralded figure in Canadian electronic music history will finally return to the country of his origins to present the music and persona that first catapulted him into becoming one of the most influential figures in techno. MUTEK is incredibly proud to present PLASTIKMAN LIVE on home turf, a concert that constitutes the Canadian premiere of the highly prized audio-visual performance Hawtin originally envisioned for his debut live performance at MUTEK 2004.

Between 1993 and 2003, PLASTIKMAN released four critically acclaimed albums that were roundly considered the high standard of how electronic sounds and theories of minimalism could be fused. From 1993’s Sheet One to 2003's Closer, Hawtin reinvented the Detroit approach to techno through the lens of the European musical avant-garde before unofficially retiring his famous alias from record. What followed was a personal mission to reinvent live electronic performance with the PLASTIKMAN LIVE concept, beginning at MUTEK in 2004.

Hawtin worked with his long-time collaborators, visual designer Ali Demirel alongside Jarrett Smith from the Canadian software architects Derivative - whose product TouchDesigner is instrumental in providing the technology that realises Hawtin's artistic vision. Last year, Plastikman Live toured the globe with a stunning experiential show that explored the convergence of sound, lighting, visuals and human interactivity.  Now the show is ready to come back home to Canada and where it all began: MUTEK.

Plastikman leads a second wave of fantastical audio-visual experiences being announced today for MUTEK 2011. Mexican ambient-techno producer MURCOF will be presenting an audacious new collaboration with the French visual collective ANTIVJ. MUTEK is also especially keen to present the larger-than-life audio-visual project WHITE BOX by Montreal duo PURFORM, composed of Elektra Festival founder ALAIN THIBAULT and video artist YAN BREULEUX. Meanwhile, legendary dub-techno pioneer POLE will take part in a special night that spotlights the connections between his native Berlin; our city of Montreal, represented here by a new DEADBEAT/LILLEVAN collaboration; and Buenos Aires, which will be represented by SOL DEL RIO and CHANCHA VIA CIRCUITO.  Also added to the MUTEK 2011 line-up are Eastern bass maven BADAWI and analog synth composer ARP

These substantial international additions lead a roster of next-generation Canadian talent who showcase just how deep and healthy the homegrown community of artists has become: ARTHUR OSKAN, BILLY DALESSANDRO, GROJ, KOMODO, MAX ULIS, MONOLITHIUM, ORGAN MOOD, SINTEG, SKINNYBONES, THE GULF STREAM, TOMAS JIRKU, WOMEN WITH KITCHEN APPLIANCES and XI.

Today’s announcement only raises the bar for what is proving to be a sensational 2011 edition, with a stellar line-up that already includes AMON TOBIN, MODESELEKTOR, FOURTET, JAMES HOLDEN, HORROR INC, TRAVERSABLE WORMHOLE, MIKA VAINIO, DEEPCHORD presents ECHOSPACE, DEADBEAT/LILLEVAN, STEPHEN BEAUPRÉ, and numerous others.

The MUTEK name has become synonymous with ground-breaking live performances by the most adventurous talents contemporary music has to offer, and this edition is no exception:  48 of the 52 acts that have been announced so far will be playing live as opposed to DJing.  Among those are 6 world premieres, 11 North American premieres, and 4 Canadian premieres.

As has become the standard, MUTEK 2011 is once again about presenting an argument for possible directions in the future of music.  These ambitious characteristics are what make MUTEK an international draw every year, garnering the festival organization the 25th Grand Prix du Conseil des arts de Montréal in 2010, as well as a prestigious Grand Prix du Tourisme du Québec award.

As always, the festival website will be MUTEK central for all new news, develeopments, podcasts, and other forms of music love.  Check back for regular updates and other special treats.
